DETROIT – A local hospital system is helping the community get in gear.
Henry Ford Emergency Departments will hold the third annual Tour de Ford: Wheels that Heal on September 9th. The bicycling event features three routes of different lengths, all starting and finishing at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
Dr. Patricia Kolowich is a Henry Ford Hospital orthopedic surgeon, sports medicine specialist and cycling fan.
"Cycling can be for all different types and levels of activity, so it's a great beginner activity, you just need your balance and you can get on that bike," said Kolowich.
Cycling can also play a positive role for patients.
"For patients recovering from surgery, recovering from an injury or with arthritis in the knee, it's a very safe and beneficial activity," said Kolowich.
The Tour de Ford is an opportunity to get involved in cycling. There is a ten mile route for beginners, and 35 and 70 mile routes for more experienced riders.
A portion of the registration fee will go to The Tom Groth Patient Medical Needs Fund. The fund was created for patients with no or limited insurance coverage to assist in defraying the costs of medications and medical supplies.
