Department of Community Health: West Nile virus cases highest ever in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Community Health reports there are 47 cases of human West Nile virus in the state, including three deaths related to the infection.
That number is an increase from the 24 cases reported Aug. 16, MDCH said. The age of victims ranges between 18 and 86 with a median age of 62.
MDCH says this is the highest number of West Nile virus cases reported for this time of year since 2002 when the disease was first detected in Michigan.
The Grand Rapids and Metro Detroit areas represent 87 percent of the reported cases.
