DETROIT – Yes, I will confess I am addicted to all things sugar! Once an addict always an addict. Cupcakes, candy, chocolate, cakes and cookies. Confession is the first step to recovering from the addiction. So once you admit that you have a thing for sugar, you are one step closer to recovery.
Through my health coaching practice I come across so many people that share the same addiction, the love of sugary confections and doubly loaded sugary drinks. Sugary drinks can range from the daily white chocolate mocha from Starbucks, the daily soda pop (depending on where you are from it could be called cold drink or just plain ole pop) to the sugar laden cocktails that we like to indulge in on the weekends.

If you say you are going to stop eating sweets and as soon as you're tempted by the sugary donut at the store you suddenly forget the pledge you just made to yourself, you're an addict. If the mere smell of baked goods makes your mouth water, you're an addict.
If you do succeed in stopping, but then someone asks if you want a piece birthday cake (at first you say no thank you) then you walk past the wonderful cream filled, icing laden treat and look at it, walk away and come back again but this time you indulge yourself not once but twice maybe four times you are an addict!!
Come on admit it, you've done it and you've done it for so long now that its been 10 years since you originally swore off sugar and now you don't even recognize your addiction nor your waistline.
You're an addict and you are not alone. Most of Americans especially have this love hate relationship with sugar. Sugar not only in the form of sweets but high fat carbs like bread and pasta that quickly convert into sugar in the body. Why is the addiction so strong? Studies have shown that the sugar addiction can be just as bad as the addiction to cocaine, alcohol or even sex. Why, because it taps into the pleasure zone of the brain.
The pleasure zone has a memory and the memory will tell you that the last time you ate that snickers bar it tasted so good and you felt a sense of euphoria, why not get that feeling again? Then right after you crashed. Upon crashing you need more sugar to pick yourself up again so you go to Starbucks for your daily sugar fix at 3 o'clock in the afternoon to satisfy the craving. The cycle goes on and on! Just a quick note on a few of the harmful effects of sugar. Click the link to view more.
