Oakwood-affiliated dermatologists from Wayne State University conduct free skin cancer screenings at the Dearborn Medical Park on Wednesday, May 20 from 2-4:30pm.

In addition to regular screenings, Dr. Jessica Kado recommends monthly self-exams and frequent use of preventative measures including sunscreen, protective clothing and avoiding the sun when UV rays are highest.

"Prevention is key with skin cancer and all types of sun damage. It only accumulates over time," she said. "Everything you know now is going to pay off down the road but the earlier you check it out, the better the outcome."

Skin cancer risk is related to the total amount of sun exposure over the course of a lifetime. This includes repeated sunburns and excessive tanning.

With summer right around the corner, dermatologists also recommend paying attention to the ABCDE's of warning signs:

• Asymmetry, or spots that have unusual shapes
• Borders, or spots that have irregular edges
• Color, or change in color
• Diameter, or a spot that is larger in diameter than a typical pencil eraser
• Evolution, anything that changes over time

Register for your free skin screening today by calling 800-543-WELL or by visiting the classes and events page on oakwood.org. The Dearborn Medical Park is located at 18100 Oakwood Blvd., across the street from Oakwood Hospital – Dearborn.
