Van Buren student diagnosed with MRSA

Edgemont Elementary School student diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – A Van Buren public schools elementary student has been diagnosed with MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Edgemont Elementary School parents received an email from the school principal on Tuesday to notify them of the illness.

"Dear Edgemont Parents, We were notified at 5 p.m. today that a student at Edgemont Elementary was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus, otherwise referred to as MRSA. Our Maintenance and Custodial Department will be thoroughly cleaning the affected areas this evening and are in contact with the Wayne County Health Department. Additional information will be sent home tomorrow," the email reads.

The principal, Delria Crippen, tells Local 4 that crews were cleaning the school Tuesday evening. School will be open on Wednesday.

They have been working with the Wayne County Health Department and following their regulations.

MRSA is a type of staph infection resistant to some antibiotics.
