WYANDOTTE, Mich. -

Women without health insurance may now be eligible to get the screening they need to detect breast cancer in its early stages.

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, in partnership with the Center for Women’s and Children's Health and Well Being in Wyandotte, is offering free breast exams and mammograms to uninsured women in the Downriver area at its semi-annual "Yes Ma'am" event.

Appointments are available from 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, May 18 at the Henry Ford Health Center – Brownstown located at 23050 West Road, Brownstown.

To be eligible for the "Yes Ma'am" program, patients must have no health insurance coverage. Mammogram necessity will be determined by a physician at the time of the exam. Patients with additional needs will be referred to alternate programs.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. As mammography screening rates have increased, more cases of breast cancer have been found at earlier stages, when they are most easily and successfully treated.

In 2009, 211,731 women in the U.S. were diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital "Yes Ma'am" program began 15 years ago to provide free mammograms to uninsured women in the Downriver region on an annual basis. Since 1999, the program has provided more than 900 mammograms to women.
