In just 10 years, Cafe d'Mongo's has become a Detroit staple

Detroit speakeasy celebrates a decade in business

Larry Mongo, owner of Cafe d'Mongo's

DETROIT – Downtown Detroit was a much different place just 10 years ago.

The city was heading into eventual bankruptcy, businesses were closing and residents were leaving.

Instead of following suit, Larry Mongo decided to open a bar - and 10 years later, he's ready to celebrate.

Cafe d'Mongo's Speakeasy, a small-ish, yet decorative bar on Griswold, has become a Detroit staple in the decade since its opening.

The bar is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Mongo thinks the evolution of Detroit has only helped.

"It evolved perfectly," said Mongo. "The stadiums, apartments, hotels and the Gilbert effect."

The speakeasy itself has stayed true to form. The walls are covered in old pictures, newspaper clippings, instruments and records. The drinks are as potent as they come.

There are couches for seats, a personable wait staff and live music till' the lights go out.

"Diversity is loved by people and it works," said Mongo. "Diversity is a sleeping giant. I listened to the hipster pollinators and didn't sell. I stayed."

The establishment will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with an event on June 29 at the speakeasy.

As for the next 10 years at Cafe d'Mongo's? Larry says stay tuned.

"Next year maybe a rooftop, high end dining," said Mongo.
