DETROIT – The Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Investigation Department is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for dumping a dog in the garbage.
A 2-year-old female Beagle was found in a trash bag on the east side of Detroit.
An employee at a nearby business found the dog in the 2000 block of Bellevue, an industrial area near Charlevoix and Mt. Elliott.
"She was half out of the garbage bag," said American Dismantling employee Jim Duffey. "She was making the most horrible moaning sounds, like a child screaming."
The dog was wearing a collar with no tags. The Humane Society has named her Gladys.
"It was crying so badly, I couldn't handle it. I almost started crying," said Duffey's coworker Connie Parmenter.
It is unknown how long the dog had been in the trash bag, but the bag was soaked with the dog's urine.
The Beagle may have suffered some form of trauma, because she was in severe pain when picked up by MHS.
"It had suffered trauma from what we can assume," said Humane Society Chief Investigator Deborah MacDonald. "It had a very low body temperature. We didn't know if this dog was going to make it."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Michigan Humane Society's Cruelty Hotline at 313-872-3401. Tips can be made anonymously.
"Someone dumped this dog on the side of the road. This was an intentional act of cruelty and we'd like to find the person responsible," said MacDonald.
