Dearborn Animal Shelter competes for $100,000

Dearborn shelter, 50 others across US compete for $100,000 in grant money

DEARBORN, Mich. – With $100,000 on the line, the next 48 hours are critical for the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

The shelter is competing with 50 others across the United States for a top prize of $100,000 in grant money. It's a competition sponsored by ASPCA -- the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The goal is to adopt out 300 more animals than in previous years. That translates to 700 animals and the shelter is really close, just less than 700 animals have been adopted out. They need to adopt out 25 more in the next 48 hours to remain in contention for the grant money.

"It's been a whole lot of work; like we're all mice moving a mountain and the good news is we are inches away from making our goal," said Sandra Boulton, spokeswoman for the shelter.

For anyone considering adopting a rescued pet the shelter is adding an incentive: the next 25 animals adopted will be $25 each. That includes sterilization and up-to-date shots.

If Dearborn does not take the top grant of $100,000 there are still thousands of dollars in grant money to win. It's money that would go a long way in helping the group.

Even with all the adoptions in the last three months there are still tons of puppies, kittens, cats and dogs available for adoption.

Anyone interested in adopting should call the Dearborn Animal Shelter at 313-943-2697.
