The decision surprised many observers, and critics call it a step backward. USA Today reports almost 10 percent of U.S. workers do their jobs from home at least one day a week.

Why the Change?

Yahoo announced its decision through a memo to employees on Friday, February 22nd. It says the new policy is designed to enhance communication and collaboration. It also said the policy could make Yahoo more productive, efficient, and fun.

Mayer is the 4th CEO to take the helm of Yahoo in recent years. She surprised many people when she disclosed she was pregnant at the time of her hiring. Mayer seems to be on the right path when it comes to turning Yahoo around, the company's stock price is up about 50 percent.

Critics say forcing people into the office bucks recent trends. The U.S. Census round the number of people working home has been increasing steadily.

Home Office Advantages

A new survey found people, who do work at home, are excited about some of the advantages. PlanetSoho surveyed 1,300 home businesses. It found 40 percent like the fact that they don't have to commute. A perk that must be especially gratifying as gas prices have stayed so high.

orty-five percent say they have more time to spend with family and friends. While 61 percent said the best thing about being their own boss is creating their own schedule.
