Philadelphia Phillies (38-35) At St. Louis Cardinals (32-38), 1:10 P.m.
(Sports Network) - Streaking right-hander Adam Eaton looks for a fifth win in six decisions today when the surging Philadelphia Phillies visit Busch Stadium in game two of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Eaton, in his first season back with the Phillies, who drafted him in 1996, has lost just once since falling to 3-3 on the year with a 3-2 loss to Arizona on May 8. In his last start, on June 17 against Detroit, he allowed six hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision. Eaton is 1-2 in five career starts against the Cardinals with a 5.04 earned run average. He is 4-1 away from home in 2007 with a 5.11 ERA in six starts. St. Louis youngster Adam Wainwright has dropped three of four decisions, including a 5-3 verdict to Kansas City on June 18, in which he allowed nine hits and four earned runs in seven innings. Previously, he downed the Royals, 7-3, on June 13 in Kansas City while allowing just one hit in eight scoreless innings. Wainwright has faced the Phillies twice as a reliever, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out two. In the opener of this set on Friday, Chase Utley went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, as the Phillies moved into second place in the NL East with a 6-0 win. Ryan Howard collected two hits, scored a run and knocked in one for Philadelphia. Since his May 25 return from the DL, Howard is hitting .302 with 10 homers and 26 RBI. He's also coming off a series in Cleveland in which he went 6-for-13 with a pair of homers and six RBIs. Jamie Moyer (7-5) yielded just seven hits over six shutout innings, walking two and striking out six for Philadelphia, which moved a half-game ahead of the Braves in the division and remained within two games of the first-place Mets. Aaron Miles, Juan Encarnacion and Chris Duncan had two hits apiece for St. Louis, which had its brief two-game winning streak halted and was shut out for the seventh time this season. Anthony Reyes (0-9), meanwhile, had another disastrous start for the Cardinals. The young right-hander, who holds a 6.64 ERA, allowed five runs and nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings en route to his 11th straight loss dating back to last September. In desperate need of a starter, the Cardinals acquired veteran left-hander Mike Maroth from Detroit prior to Friday's contest. The 29-year-old owns a record of 5-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 starts this season and could be available as early as Saturday. St. Louis certainly needs the help, as the rotation has struggled mightily this year, and three Cardinals starters are currently on the disabled list -- Chris Carpenter, Braden Looper and Mark Mulder. Cardinals starters also rank last in the National League in ERA and have averaged under 5 2/3 innings per start. The Phillies and Cardinals split a six-game series last year after Philly went 4-2 during the 2005 season.
