Kmart Layoffs Heading To Corporate Level
CEO Making An Effort To 'Right Size' Staff

Kmart will lay off some of its workers at its Troy corporate headquarters, Local 4 reported.
Local 4 business editor Rod Meloni said the move was an effort to "right size," that is to get the number of employees at the Troy headquarters to the number of employees nationwide at its stores.
Although Kmart management has not been willing to talk specifically about the number of cuts they will make at headquarters, the company could cut up to 1,000 jobs.
Kmart management has said that between 25 and 30 percent of the senior staff at the corporate headquarters will be cut. The layoffs could happen by the end of March.
"While the company struggled to address significant challenges this past year, Kmart is positioned to emerge from Chapter 11 in April with a stronger balance sheet and liquidity position," said Julian C. Day, Kmart's chief executive officer. Day made the statement when accepting his promotion from president to corporate executive officer in January.
Meloni reported that Day is "basically taking charge and creating the size of a management team that he believes is necessary to keep the corporation alive in the years ahead."
