PONTIAC, Mich. -- Some Black Friday shoppers have learned they were double-charged for their purchases at Toys 'R' Us.
Toys 'R' Us confirmed the nationwide glitch in the system was because the store opened earlier than usual. Some shoppers were charged the day of the purchase and then charged again -- the entire amount -- 48 hours later.
The retailer told Local 4 that it has identified all of the double charges nationwide and is in the process of fixing the error.
Sisters Shawna Saylor and Collette Vellucci said they braved the crowds on Black Friday to find a deal at the Pontiac Toys 'R' Us, but when they checked their statements the next day, they didn't see the savings. Instead they saw overdrafts on their statements.
"This morning, when I got online to check my bank account, it had come out on Saturday and then again this morning," said Vellucci.
Toys 'R' Us wouldn't tell Local 4 how many customers were affected. However, the company did say it hoped to have all of the double charges credited back to the affected customers' accounts by Wednesday.
Saylor said she hopes the charges will be corrected even sooner.
"Meanwhile, I am having to borrow money from relatives, which don't have a lot of money to cover, to make sure I don’t accrue charges," said Saylor.
Toys 'R' Us will cover overdraft fees that resulted from the double charges, but customers will have to provide documentation.
