LIVONIA, Mich. -- A do-gooder doll sold only in Michigan Wal-Marts might make a local woman worth millions.
The doll, called Supa Dupa Babee, is being sold at Wal-Mart in Livonia.
"It's very nice to see something come along that's wholesome, where the kids can embrace it in their own world," said the doll's creator, Jean Star-Gater. "Everybody knows that Supa Dupa Babee is the bravest champion of Earthland children, teaching them to be 'supa' smart and drug-free."
Star-Gater created a pilot television show for the character she first started bringing to Detroit city school children a decade ago.
Supa Dupa Babee actually started as an accident via a public service announcement on a Sunday television show Star-Gater hosted and branched out into a human-sized super hero.
Supa Dupa Babee has gone through a number of changes over the year. It started with a stuffed doll, coloring books, and classroom materials, now blossoming into a real doll for mass production. Along with Supa Dupa Babee will come a raft of companion character toys that can be purchased in eight Wal-Marts around mid-and-southeast Michigan.
Star-Gater is excited about the possibility that the doll could expand to be sold outside of the Michigan Wal-Mart test market, and though big bucks could fill her future, she says it's all about the anti-drug, child-saving message.
"There are not a lot of toys out there that tell the kids that everybody needs a friend," Star-Gater said. "But (this doll) has books to go with it that teaches them diversity and honesty."
Star-Gater is waiting for Wal-Mart to give her the green light to go national. The minute that happens, she says other toy companies are in line, and she hopes for a Saturday morning cartoon and maybe even a Supa Dupa Babee toothbrush.
