Several Farmer Jack stores that closed due to the chain's financial problems have reopened Tuesday with a new look.
Customers waited in line for the 8 a.m. opening of the Food Basics discount grocery stores, a strategy by the grocery chain to save money and draw new business, Local 4 reported.
Farmer Jack announced the closure of 10 of its metro Detroit outlets in January with the promise of reopening as Food Basics. The Detroit-based grocer initially announced it was closing 13 stores; however Farmer Jack President Mike Carter said the company decided to close just three stores in Brighton, Rochester Hills and Ypsilanti. The others will be converted.
Farmer Jack's parent company has operated the Food Basics discount grocery stores in Canada and some East Coast states. The stores offer lower prices, but fewer selections and services, including no deli counter, fresh cut meats, or specialty items, the station reported.
"At Food Basics, we will provide fresh food at low prices and without the frills," Carter said.
Food Basics promises to cut customers' food cost by about a third, offering triple the difference back if customers find something cheaper elsewhere.
Another change is customers who don't bring their own bags will have to pay a nickel per bag at the Food Basics store.
The following Food Basics locations opened Tuesday:
19150 Telegraph Road, Detroit
8665 Rosa Parks Boulevard, Detroit
8000 West Outer Drive, Detroit
9023 Joseph Campau, Hamtramck
19230 Harper Avenue, Harper Woods
14100 Woodward Avenue, Highland Park
2400 West Fort, Lincoln Park
3600 Oakwood Boulevard, Melvindale
3995 East 14 Mile Road, Sterling Heights
35400 East Michigan Avenue, Wayne
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is expected to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. at the West Outer Drive location.
In addition to the Food Basics stores, the company plans to open a new Farmer Jack store in Waterford Friday, the station reported.
