Family's Dogs In Search Of New Home

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2005

A local family is hoping to find a home for their beloved dogs.

The Bergmanns have to give their dogs, Baron and Harley, Local 4's Ruth Spencer reported.

John Bergmann's wife, who is sick with Crohn's disease and other illnesses, stays home with the couple's 7-month-old daughter.

"It's just been too difficult, and she's not getting healthy, and the stress of trying to juggle these things for her all day, it's not fair," said Bergmann.

Harley is also ill with a digestive condition called Addison's disease. He's required to get a $130 shot once per month.

The Bergmanns said they'll pay for the shot for the rest of Harley's life if it helps him to find a good home.

"He's a great dog. He's a lot of fun, and so is Baron," said Bergmann. "They're just wonderful animals, but the disease could be a drawback and that's why we've offered to pay."

Harley has been trained by dog trainer extraordinaire Vlady Roytapel. Roytapel said he will help with the transition to new owners.

"If they need me in the future, they can call me," said Roytapel. "I will come, without any charge, and help them as much as I can because I want to see those two dogs have homes."

Harley has been such a comfort to Bergmann's wife, it will be hard to let him go.

"This is worse than having a pet pass away," said Bergmann. "I've had that; we've all had that. But this is worse, because you're giving away part of your family."

Harley and Baron are both 4 years old. The family says they love people and get along well with the couple's daughter, letting her play with them and pull their ears.

Both dogs are up to date with their shots and have never missed veterinary appointments.

The dogs need a yard to run in and a responsible family to make sure they get the attention they need.
