Thousands of autoworkers will lose their jobs, but there may be jobs waiting in the same field. There is a shortage of mechanics, and companies like Tier One Auto Suppliers and Auto Dealers are hiring headhunters to assist in finding good mechanics, Local 4 reported."The most recent figures show there's a shortage of 40,000 to 60,000 mechanics a year," said Derek Dyer of Hire Expectations, a headhunter for auto mechanics.
Those numbers are nationwide, and in Michigan, many mechanics can start off on the right foot, according to station's reports."We all know a neighborhood mechanic, but you have to ask yourself, 'Can that mechanic fix one of these -- a hybrid pickup truck?" said Dyer.Mark Tallon, of Marty Feldman Chevrolet in Novi, is the gold standard in automotive service, and explained that manufacturers require dealers to keep a minimum number of gold standard mechanics on staff. Feldman Chevrolet Repair Chief Troy Wittke said if he were to lose one mechanic he would be in trouble."Some of the gentleman at Ford, GM and Chrysler were technicians prior to going to the corporations," Wittke told Local 4. "If they wanted to get back, they have the upper hand at training and into a shop."There is opportunity for high school students as well as professionals in need of a job.
