DETROIT -

Parents, you'll want to hold tight to your credit cards when you read this story. It's about the rising average cost of going to prom.

A survey from Visa appeared in the USA Today. It found the average cost is up to $1,078 this year. That's up from $807 last year.

Plenty of analysts blame our "red carpet" culture for influencing girls.

Linda Korman, advertising director for Seventeen Prom and Teen Prom, told the USA today that teen girls view prom as their "red-carpet moment" and are "heavily influenced" by celebrities who walk actual red carpets in designer gowns.

Here's some good news for Michigan parents: the average cost in the Midwest is the lowest at $696.

The Northeast was the highest at $2,000.

The survey also found families in the North are expected to spend about $1,047, and families in the West are looking at prom costs, on average, of $744.
