Volkswagen reveals CrossBlue at 2013 NAIAS
CrossBlue is Volkswagen's latest sports utility vehicle
Volkswagen’s display at the 2013 North American International Auto Show was lined with a variety of its vehicle lineup, but the emphasis was on its latest sports utility vehicle, the CrossBlue.
Monday’s reveal at Cobo Center in Detroit did show off the German automaker’s wide selection of vehicles, but it was the CrossBlue, a midsized SUV, that grabbed center stage. While Beetles, Jetas and Passats were strategically scattered across the display, the SUVs took center stage.
That’s because, as Volkswagen Group of America's CEO Jonathan Browning said, the Detroit show always has a focus on SUVs, so the company was delighted to reveal the Cross Blue, a slightly bigger version of the Cross Coupe.
The 4-wheel-drive SUV seats six and boasts an 89 mile per gallon-e. That would make it the most fuel-efficient vehicle of its kind, the automaker says. It’s a plug-in hybrid that’s sure to grab some attention as the auto show continues.
Volkswagen said it enjoyed its best December since 1970 and its best year overall since 1973. While the Jetta and Passat represented 64 percent of the company’s sales, Volkswagen hopes its newest line of midsized SUVs will further its growth and success.
The Cross Blue might represent the future of the VW family – a seemingly ever-growing lineup of German-engineered favorites.
