Don't Be Dazzled by Short-Term Savings

DETROIT – Consumers are always looking for ways to save money.

But some quick cost-cutting could end up costing you more later or could be a waste of money if you don't think things through.

Ruth to the Rescue has assembled a list some common areas where you could think you've found a bargain that's not such a bargain.

For example, when a store offers you 30 percent off if you open a credit card- it seems like a good idea, especially on a big ticket item. However, if you don't pay it off right away, you could end up paying more in interest that the 30 percent you saved.

Also, you might want to reconsider those "buy one, get one free" deals. They can make your heart beat faster, but stop before you buy. Ask yourself- do you really need two pairs of shoes?

Will you really wear both, or will one sit in your closet? If you truly would buy them anyway, its a great deal. If not, you may be wasting money.

'Tis the season for tax preparation. Many of us hate to pay someone to do our taxes. If you have a very simple return, you're probably right, but if you have anything that looks complex,

spending a few hundred dollars, could save you thousands!

Car owners listen up! Many of us try to put off routine maintenance as long as possible. You could live to regret that decision. Not getting those tires rotated might save you money this month,

but cost you more money if you get a flat next month.

Here are two more tips you didn't see on our Local 4 News report at 6 p.m.:

Don't buy food in bulk, if your family won't truly eat it all. There's nothing worse that uneaten food rotting and going in the garbage. Getting a good deal is great. Saving money and eating

what you buy is much better.

Finally, not having any health insurance or avoiding the doctor could not only be more costly in the long run, it could be hazardous to your health. No doubt buying your own health

insurance can get expensive, but there are policies that will cover catastrophic medical situations, so you're not on the hook for thousands in doctor bills at the worst possible time.

And, like caring for your car, caring for your body could help you avoid bigger bills in the future.

The bottom line for bargain hunters, think through decisions you make to save money, and consider if there might be a downside you might not think of right off the bat.
