Sometimes dreaming about your next vacation is the only thing that gets you through a bitter Michigan winter. Ruth to the Rescue found plenty of people who were ready to get away after our recent deep freeze.

"I think I'd like to be somewhere warm, maybe Southern California, maybe Florida," said Patrick Simpson of Detroit.

More on some beach bargains in a moment, first let's look at some of the new travel trends of 2014. The first new trend has nothing to do with warm weather!

"We expect to see a big surge in U.S. ski destinations as people get Olympic fever," said Jeanine Tornatore, Senior Editor at The Winter Olympics leap into action February 6th, and she says you could see many tourists looking to emulate their new Olympic heroes by hitting slopes around the country.

The build up to the summer Olympics in 2016 is already boosting the appeal of Brazil. The South American country is sprucing up for many big events.

"They also have the largest gay pride parade in the world, as well as they are hosting a grand prix formula one race in November," Tornatore told Ruth to the Rescue, "So, for international destinations and getaways, this is one that we think will be on top of people's lists."

Booking by phone, saving money

Tornatore said when it comes to booking your travel, more travelers are using mobile phones, and that process should be improving.

"The travel companies that are creating these apps are putting a lot of money into creating a better experience as this becomes a more popular way to book," she told Ruth to the Rescue.

When it comes to saving money, you may be better off focusing on the hotel, instead of the air fare. Tornatore says predicting how high air fares will go is tricky. However, you can do some research that can show you which cities are offering the best hotel rates. For example, Tornatore says new hotels are being added in cities like Orlando and Las Vegas.

More hotels means more competition which will help keep rates down. So, if air fares go up, you might be able to make up the cost by saving money on your hotel bill. Plus, Tornatore says you might get more perks for your buck at certain hotels.

"This is everything from free breakfast, free shuttle service, free WiFi -- to resort credit where people get free money to spend on things like spa services and rounds of golf," she said.

Warm weather escapes

As for warm weather destinations this winter, Tornatore said you should check out Nassau in the Bahamas and Las Vegas for competitive hotel rates. She told Ruth to the Rescue that average hotel rates are coming in $100 a night in Las Vegas in the new year.

Ruth to the Rescue also checked with David Fishman of the Cadillac Travel Group in Southfield for some beach bargains. He agreed with Tornatore's assessment that hotel deals are plentiful, but said it can be tough to find good air fares. He put together this list of possible bargains.
