Alcohol suspected in Redford crash, child didn't have car seat

Police say the father driving the mini-van did have alcohol in his system

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Alcohol may have played a role in a two-car crash in Redford Township Sunday morning. A father driving a white mini-van was traveling West on Fenkell Street at Telegraph Road, Sgt. Duane Gregg of the Redford Township Police Department says.

The white mini-van ran a red light, and a black BMW traveling North on Telegraph Road hit the van in the driver-side door.

When emergency crews arrived, the father driving the van was unconscious. He was transported to the hospital. No word on his condition, but he is still alive.

Also inside the white mini-van, a 3 year old child was not strapped into a car seat. The child did not suffer serious injuries, and is now in the custody of the mother.

The driver of the BMW is an 18-year-old male, and was treated at the scene and released with minor injuries.

Police say the father driving the mini-van did have alcohol in his system. Sgt. Duane Gregg says charges will be sought for Child Endangerment, as well as Operating While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended.
