$1 billion invested in Detroit riverfront over 10 years

Detroit RiverFront Conservancy expects investment to continue into the future

DETROIT – Since the creation of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, $1 billion dollars has been invested along Detroit's riverfront.

From the carousel, the bike tours, to ice cream shops, the Riverwalk and riverfront have been on a comeback for years.

"When we first moved here, I'll tell you, we came down here looking for a place to eat, a place to sit by the water, and it was very, very hard to find. But, over the years, it's been fantastic," said Catherine Lebiedzik.

The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy says its plan worked. If you develop the waterfront, people will come downtown to enjoy it.

The commission said the $1 billion invested in the last decade is sustainable, stable and growable. They estimate that the growth potential can double to an additional $1 billion.

Current vendors are already looking for ways to expand opportunities.

"I'm the RiverFront Cafe manager, looking at doing some culinary inspired cuisine down here at the Detroit Riverwalk on the health and wellness level, as well as have some items for the greasy spoon eater as well," said Chef Antonio Moore.

People are spending almost $44 million annually along the RiverFront. Visitors are bringing families down for a safe and fun atmosphere.

"I can look at boats, I love riding the carousel, and I can look at the water," said Mary, who was downtown with her mother.

The RiverFront project expands from the Ambassador Bridge all the way down to Belle Isle.
