1 dead, 1 hurt in shooting on Detroit's west side

Gunman kills woman, injures boyfriend before setting car on fire

DETROIT – A 19-year-old woman was killed and her boyfriend critically hurt early Wednesday morning when someone opened fire on them as they sat in a car on Detroit's west side before also setting the car on fire.

Police said witnesses told them that someone leaned inside the car and started shooting just before 3 a.m. as it was parked on Oakfield, near McNichols and the Southfield Freeway.

The woman died from the gunshots but the 21-year-old man got out and tried to run, police said. The gunman chased him, pouring gas on him before torching the car with the woman's body inside. The car, a green Ford Contour, has no license plate or VIN number on it.

The 21-year-old man is hospitalized at Sinai-Grace. His father, Sid Bogan, had identified him as Julian Bogan. He is still in critical condition.

The gunman is still on the loose.

Sources say the woman is 19-year-old Tamika Brooks.

Bogan's father, Sid Bogan, said his nightmare started early Wednesday morning when he received the phone call.

"I'm very distraught ... haven't been able to get sleep," Bogan said.

Despite Julian's injuries, he was able to give police some information, but not much, as they work to figure out a motive and suspect.
