Police say driver lost control, was hit by van

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A crumpled pile of metal is all that remains of a gray Ford Focus that crashed early Monday morning on I-75, claiming the life of the driver.

Michigan State Police said the driver, a man, appears to have lost control of the sedan just before 6 a.m. on the icy stretch near Clarkston Road in Independence Township. The car slid and was hit by a van.

The Focus' driver, a Clinton Township resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not yet releasing his name.

The roads were so slick in the area that even a fire truck dispatched to the scene was rear-ended by both a pickup truck and a Ford Escort.

Police said they are also investigating a fatal crash at I-94 and Masonic. No other details on that victim were immediately released.

Police are urging drivers to slow down on the roads as more frigid air settles on metro Detroit.
