1 found dead in Van Buren apartment fire

No other injuries reported during incident

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – One person was found dead by fire crews during a fire on the ground floor of an apartment in Van Buren Township just before 4 a.m. Saturday.

An activated fire alarm and 911 callers brought the Van Buren Department of Public Safety to the apartment after reports that smoke was gathering in the common hallways. Reports told the fire crews that a ground floor apartment was well-involved with fire and the windows were starting to break out.

Firefighters arrived just after 4 a.m. and began searching through the apartment for people while fighting the flames. The crews found the victim lying in bed moments after entering the apartment.

The firefighters extinguished the fire to prevent it from spreading to other apartments and had the situation under control at 4:52 a.m.

One family was displaced by the fire, but there were no other injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
