1 killed, 12 left homeless by Dearborn apartment fire

DEARBORN, Mich. – A 65-year-old man was killed and 12 tenants were left homeless by a fire that consumed an apartment building on Salina Street in Dearborn Saturday morning.

Firefighters found the body of Mohammed Shater in his upstairs apartment.

Walter Stemberger saw the fire at 3:30 a.m. and tried to wake everyone inside the building.

"I felt a lot of heat, and that's when I woke him up," Stemberger said. "I just hollered five times, 'everybody out the front door.'"

Two people jumped out of windows to escape the flames, including a 34-year-old man who broke his legs in the jump.

Tenants say the fire started under the basement staircase. Investigators were seen looking for clues as to what may have caused the fire.

The people burned out of the apartment say they lost everything.
