In a statement, U.S. Steel said the crane operator was a contractor who worked for Connelly Crane Company. No one else was hurt.
Workers say the crane was there making repairs from a pipe collapse last week.
The company told Local 4 it would be issuing a statement soon, but didn't release any immediate details.
The facility is near Visger Road and Jefferson Avenue.
