Memorial Day is thought of as the unofficial start of summer, but auto experts warn it is also the start of the "deadliest 100 days of the year" for teen drivers.
According to AAA, more than five thousand people have died in crashes involving teen drivers during the one hundred day stretch between Memorial Day and the Labor Day weekend.
"This is the time when teens are really on the road more than other times of the year," said AAA Spokesperson Jennifer Ryan.

A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that during that period more than one thousand people, on average, die in accidents involving teen drivers and fatal crashes linked to teens are 16 percent higher compared to the rest of the year.
The study found three common distractions: "Interacting with a passenger. Interacting with your cell phone and number three was looking at something in or around the vehicle," Ryan said.
AAA recommends parents talk to their children about driving, establish strict family rules, and teach by example.
