DETROIT -- More than two dozen members of the Michigan Coast Guard have been called up to help the nation respond to the terrorist attacks.
The Detroit Coast Guard station on Belle Isle has been busy since the Sept. 11 attacks. They have accompanied cruise ships that have come through the area and guarded tanker ships carrying fuel, as a precaution.
Eight members of the Detroit station have been called to temporary active duty, meaning they will serve for one year. They have already been placed on duty in New York. Typically the status means a 30-day tour.
Twenty-six Coast Guard reservists from Michigan have been called, and 120 Coast Guard reservists from eight states have been pressed into duty.
