City Council Votes To Relocate Nativity Scene

POSTED: Tuesday, November 21, 2006
UPDATED: 8:35 am EST November 21, 2006

City leaders in Berkley voted Monday night to remove a nativity scene from City Hall.

The nativity scene has stood outside City Hall every Christmas season for 65 years.

Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union accused the city of violating the Constitution with the display.

Monday night, council members voted 6-1 to turn the nativity scene over to a group of clergy who will administer a rotation plan between local churches.

Some residents agreed it was violating the Constitution's separation of church and state.

Other residents told Local 4, they thought the whole situation was sad.
