Missing Woman Investigation Has New Twist

POSTED: Friday, January 12, 2007
UPDATED: 2:13 pm EST January 17, 2007

Police said they have discovered new details in the investigation of a woman who has been missing since her house burned Monday.

The woman, 49-year-old Lizzie Collier-Sweet, and her husband Roger are going through a divorce, Brownstown Township police said.

Brownstown police Lt. Robert Grant said when the husband was asked about his wife's whereabouts, he said if he had to guess, she was probably dead in the woods.

Police are now taking a second look at the death of Roger Sweet's first wife, Marlene, who they said died in 1990 in Farmington Hills.

Her death was ruled an accident at the time, but the medical examiner and Farmington Hills police are pulling files and re-examining evidence to see if the death could be suspicious.

Sources told Local 4 that in 1990, Roger Sweet called 911 and an ambulance came and found Marlene in the bathroom. Roger said she fell. She was taken to a hospital and died six days later. Doctors ruled her death as accidental, but when her body arrived at the funeral home, employees there said they were suspicious. The medical examiner performed an autopsy and ruled the death as accidental.

Police said they are now reopening the investigation.
