SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The cause of a fatal freight train accident on the Grand Trunk railroad tracks in Springfield Township Thursday morning is under investigation.
A northbound train with 89 cars was heading toward Flint when it slammed into a southbound train with 94 cars. Both trains are owned by Canadian National Railroad.
Two people were killed and two others are listed in critical condition, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. The two injured people were freed from the wreckage and taken to area hospitals, Local 4 reported. One man was trapped for about four hours. One victim was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor and one was taken to Genesys Medical Center near Flint.
About 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled from one of the train cars. Another unknown chemical from one of the trains was thought to be hazardous, and evacuations of the surrounding area were ordered as a precaution. About 100 homes within a half-mile radius of the accident were evacuated. Andersonville Elementary School in Clarkston was also closed.

The accident also closed Andersonville Road at Big Lake, Hogback and Farley roads.
The accident happened around 6 a.m., according to the Sheriff's Department. Residents living near the collision site said that the impact of the crash shook their homes, Local 4 reported.
Canadian National said that their priorities and concerns were for the families of the victims, determining the cause of the crash and getting the wreckage cleaned up.
The fire was out Thursday afternoon, according to Local 4. Heavy cranes were brought in to begin cleaning up the wreckage.
National Transportation Safety Board officials were on the site Thursday evening and were trying to determine what caused the trains to collide, Local 4 reported.
