Unsettled Pontiac Mayoral Race Causes Conflict

Recounts Called In Several Metro Detroit Elections

POSTED: Monday, November 26, 2001
UPDATED: 9:27 pm EST November 26, 2001

The Pontiac mayoral race has yet to be settled weeks after voters elected a successor to incumbent Mayor Walter Moore in a close race, and Monday, the winner blasted the current administration for being uncooperative in turning over the reigns.

Mayor-elect Willie Payne beat Moore in the Nov. 6 election by 69 votes. Payne received 5,019 votes, while Moore received 4,950 votes. He came out of nowhere to beat the incumbent in a close race that was somewhat surprising to observers.

Moore asked for a recount, and a cloud hangs over the election until the issue is settled. He has refused to concede the election

Payne told Local 4 that the $10,000 and the office in City Hall that typically goes to the mayor-elect's transition effort has not been received because of the recount demand.

Payne has used his campaign headquarters as the base for his transition team.

The two men met to discuss the transition process last week, Local 4 reported. Payne accused Moore of failing to turn over city records his team needs to begin moving forward.

Moore told Local 4 that he has not withheld any information that has been requested from his administration. He called accusations that he refused to turn over documents "misinformation."

Five races in four Oakland County cities ended in close finishes, with winners and losers separated by as little as one vote.

As a result, recounts have been demanded and one victory was overturned.

A final count of absentee ballots turned a Walled Lake City Council candidate's one-vote win into a one-vote loss.

Rebecca Gulyas was a council member-elect for 10 days before the recount handed the victory to Raymond Swett.

In addition to Pontiac, recounts are also under way in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills.
