11-year-old boy, 30-year-old stepfather shot in east Detroit

Boy, stepfather shot near Pelkey Street, Fairmount Drive, expected to be OK

DETROIT – An 11-year-old boy and his 30-year-old stepfather were shot Tuesday evening on Detroit's east side near State Fair and Schoenherr streets.

Police say the two were shot during some kind of altercation at Pelkey Street and Fairmount Drive.

Both were transported to a nearby hospital where they are listed in stable condition. They are expected to be OK.

Detroit police chief: This is unacceptable

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said this kind of crime is unacceptable.

"Right now we're still in the middle of an investigation," said Craig. "We believe the suspect is somewhere in the area so we've deployed a canine and we're searching."

Craig said police are not certain what may have caused this shooting.

"What I do know is an 11-year-old child has been shot and that is not acceptable," he said.

Craig took the helm at the Detroit Police Department earlier this month after serving as Cincinnati's chief.
