DETROIT - An 11-year-old boy stole his mother's car early Wednesday morning and went on a joyride that ended in a crash on Detroit's west side.
It took rescue crews nearly an hour to pull the boy from the mangled Dodge Journey after it crashed on Spinoza near Joy Road.
He was taken to Children's Hospital in Detroit.
The pole impaled the car, but police said the boy only suffered scratches.
Police said the boy told them he had drove for about two miles and reached 90 miles per hour before crashing.
Police said this is the second time the boy has taken his mother's car.
Witness describes 'screeching' of crash
Courtney Morrison said she was up early to pray when she first heard the sounds before seeing the crash.
"It started making screeching noises, the tires were screeching, and the next thing you know the car hit the curb. He bounced back this way and he bounced three times," she said.
Morrison said she ran across the street to try to help and heard the boy calling for help.
"He was saying, 'Tell my mama I'm sorry, I've been a bad boy. I stole my mama's car,'" she said.
Morrison said she noticed only after she had stepped back in her bare feet that she had missed several down wires that surrounded the car.
"God is great, God is great, God is great," she said.
