Passengers Stranded On Tarmac For Hours

POSTED: Tuesday, April 10, 2007
UPDATED: 8:44 am EDT April 10,2007

Passengers returning to Detroit from Cancun were stranded on a tarmac for several hours Monday night.

"We felt trapped. We really did. We felt like 150 people stuck on a plane and no one knew we were out here." said Coleen Crawley, one of the passengers.

Crawley said they were told they could not leave the plane because there was no custom supervisor available.

They had apparently left for the night, according to Crawley.

The Spirit Airlines flight landed on time at Detroit Metropolitan Airport around 11 p.m. Passengers were not able to get off the plane until almost 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Crawley said things were getting really uncomfortable as time went on. "People had to use bathroom. The bathroom had no water. Kids were getting really tired. There wasn't any screaming crazy, but there was a lot of upset children."

There has been no official statement released from the airport yet.

A custom agent told Local 4 there were several reasons for the problem. One was an accident on the runway last night in which an 18-year-old employee was killed. A custom agent added that there were delays and several flights were re-routed to Metro Airport that were not expected. Finally, a custom agent told Local 4 the custom system went down.
