Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Hackel
Former Sheriff's Accuser Sought Damages

Mount Clemens, Mich. -- A judge dismissed a civil lawsuit filed by a woman who was sexually assaulted by former Macomb County Sheriff William Hackel.
The 27-year-old woman's charges of rape landed the 60-year-old Hackel in a federal prison for three to 15 years.
He lost his job after being convicted in April 2000 of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The Lansing-area woman said that Hackel raped her at a convention at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant in 1999.
She was trying to sue Hackel for $25,000 in damages. Macomb County Circuit Judge James Biernat granted a defense request Tuesday to scrap the woman's civil lawsuit.
The judge said that an agreement in the first case blocked it. The woman's attorneys were not commenting.
Biernat dismissed another lawsuit against Hackel filed by the woman in August because she failed to show up for her deposition.
At the time her attorney said that she might be in a poor mental state, which might have been a factor in her decision not to follow through with the case. She was seeking damages for distress and humiliation.
Hackel's attorneys have argued that he did not get a fair trial because the Mount Pleasant jury that convicted him was not allowed to hear about the victim's rape accusations against other men.
