Alicia Keys, Aaliyah Top AMA Winners

Destiny's Child, McGraw Also Win Big

POSTED: 11:51 p.m. EST January 9, 2002

Female vocalists ruled the 29th annual American Music Awards, presented Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Alicia KeysAlicia Keys, pop trio Destiny's Child, and the late singer Aaliyah each won two awards. Keys, who led the nominations with five, won the favorite new artist awards in both the pop/rock and soul/rhythm and blues categories, but lost out to Janet Jackson in the pop/rock favorite female artist category.

The members of Destiny's Child appeared shocked at their wins, for pop/rock album of the year for "Survivor," and favorite band, duo or group in the soul/rhythm and blues category.

AaliyahAaliyah was honored posthumously as best female artist in the soul/rhythm and blues category. No representatives were sent to accept the award on her behalf, but instead, the audience gave a standing ovation in her memory. The late singer was also honored with the soul/rhythm and blues album of the year honors.

Husband and wife team Tim McGraw and Faith Hill dominated the country category. McGraw won for favorite male vocalist and album of the year for "Set This Circus Down," and accepted Hill's award for female vocalist of the year.

Among the other major winners was Lenny Kravitz, who won the favorite male artist award in the pop/rock category.

"This is pretty amazing, when I was 12 years old, these guys turned me on to some serious rock and roll," said Kravitz, accepting the award from presenters Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from Kiss.

Michael JacksonThe awards ceremony has been mired in controversy of late, as show producer Dick Clark filed a $10 million lawsuit against Grammy president C. Michael Greene in December, alleging hardball business tactics. Among the allegations was a claim that Greene had threatened to deny Michael Jackson an opportunity to perform at next month's Grammys if Jackson showed up to accept his artist of the century award at the American Music Awards.

Clark was in jovial mood at the ceremony, however, as he appeared in a dress at the start of the show.

Jackson's appearance came at the end of the awards ceremony, with a video montage of his career. Despite all the hoopla caused by Clark's lawsuit, Jackson's speech turned out to be short and uneventful.

After calling presenter Chris Tucker "the funniest man in the world," Jackson read names from a list for his acceptance. Among the people he thanked were his mother and father, Elizabeth Taylor, Quincy Jones, and his "other father, Marlon Brando."
