DETROIT -- A winter weather advisory remains in effect for southeast Michigan until about noon Wednesday as a storm blankets the area with freezing rain and snow.
Rain moved across the region Tuesday night and created slick roads as the temperature dipped to 32 degrees and below. Motorists encountered freezing rain at the beginning of the Wednesday morning rush hour, Local 4 reported. Snow then began to cover the freezing rain, creating a dangerous mix on the roads.
Minor accidents were reported on roadways Wednesday morning, including one on I-696 near Woodward and one on Mound Road northbound at I-696.
About two to three inches of snow was expected to fall Wednesday morning in northern metro Detroit and end by lunchtime, according to Local 4's Big Picture Weather.
Wednesday's high is expected to reach 33 degrees, but the temperature is expected to dip below freezing by nightfall. Snow is expected between Wednesday night and Thursday morning and could accumulate 3 inches to 6 inches. Local 4 meteorologist Eric Wilson said to expect this storm to be worse than Wednesday morning.
The storm front approaching from the west will continue bringing moisture to the area for the next two days, according to the Local 4 weather team. Freezing rain or sleet is expected Thursday and could further complicate travel around the region.
