Social Security Tax Form Mix Up Troubling (2/06/01)
Findings Should Be Made Public
POSTED: 7:49 p.m. EST February 6, 2002
Nothing has caused more consumer fraud complaints in the past year than identity theft.
It's one of the fastest growing crimes in the country.
Give a crook of even chimp-like intelligence a social security number, and it's almost as good as handing him your credit card.
So when we revealed last week that the city of Detroit had included social security numbers on the outside of income tax forms, it caused a stink.
Mayor Kilpatrick at first blamed vendors, then admitted it was an internal problem. He publicly apologized for the embarassing error and even sent letters to Detroit taxpayers promising to get to the bottom of what happened.
It is essential that those findings are made public.
Two supervisors have resigned over this screw up. It's important now to assure everyone it will not happen again.
