The Wayne County Medical Examiner has released what may have caused the death of a mentally disabled man.

Charles Mancill, 24, died Wednesday after a 20-minute scuffle with three of his group home counselors outside of a Super Kmart.

The coroner said that Mancill died of "positional asphyxiation." That means that the weight of his body was preventing the flow of oxygen. A final cause of death won't be made until results from a toxicology screening are released.

Officers were called to the Kmart store on Ford Road shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday because of a disturbance in the parking lot. When they arrived, they found Charles Mancill unconscious and unresponsive, police said.

Canton Fire Department paramedics were called and officers began CPR until a unit arrived. The victim was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia. He was pronounced dead at approximately 3:05 p.m.

Mancill is a resident of a Redford Township group home for the mentally challenged, according to police. He was a passenger in a group home van that was stopped at the store to pick up another resident.

Police said that group home workers escorted Mancill into the store to use the restroom and while inside he took a toy from the toy department, then ran from the store.

Group home workers gave chase and tried to restrain Mancill to retrieve the toy, and a struggled ensued, police said. The victim lost consciousness while being restrained, according to investigators.

Kmart said that its security guards were not involved in the incident. The company extended its sympathy to the victim's family and have provided surveillance video to police.
