Public safety officials in Highland Park will get their jobs back after the city and union worked out a deal.
Officers should return to work Wednesday under their current collective bargaining agreement, the Wayne County Circuit Court decided. This means that the patrols by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department will end.
The city's police force was disbanded in December because of financial problems. The sheriff's deputies have been patrolling the city since that time.
Finances also caused problems for the city's fire department. Firefighters received a memo earlier this month saying that their pay will be delayed for an uncertain amount of time due to lack of city funds. Most firefighters reportedly stayed on the job even without a paycheck.
The returning officers will either serve as firefighters or police officers, but not both as they did before, Local 4 reported.
