HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. -- The Highland Park Police Department re-opened for business at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The department was shut down in December when a state-appointed financial manager for Highland Park ordered budget cuts. Wayne County sheriff's deputies have been patrolling the city ever since.
Now an agreement between the city and police union will have 44 officers return to work under tight budget constraints. Officers should return to work under their current collective bargaining agreement, the Wayne County Circuit Court decided.
There may be another round of firings in the future, Local 4 reported.
Finances also caused recent problems for the city's fire department. Firefighters received a memo earlier this month saying that their pay will be delayed for an uncertain amount of time due to lack of city funds.
Most firefighters reportedly stayed on the job even without a paycheck.
The city reportedly has an $11 million deficit.
