Opponents to a proposed trash fee protested Tuesday by driving a 14-foot-long plastic pig through the streets of Plymouth.
The group, Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, tried to call attention to the what it considers a "pig-headed" plan.
According to the group, the proposal is for a 3000 percent increase on the fee to dispose of garbage in Michigan. The plan, which has been approved by the state House, is aimed at stopping the influx of trash from Canada.
Democratic state Rep. Marc Corriveau, who represents Plymouth and Northville, backs the plan. He said many families in his community support the idea because they are tired of Canadian companies trucking trash into Michigan landfills.
Opponents fear the fee will ultimately be passed on to individual customers, so on Tuesday members of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance went door to door posting fliers that oppose the plan.
The proposal must still be passed by the state Senate.
