YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The president of Eastern Michigan University apologized to his board of regents Tuesday for the handling of information about the slaying of a 22-year-old student in her dorm room.
"I apologized to you and say ... never again will such a confounding series of mistakes be made on my watch," said President John Fallon.
An independent report concluded that the school violated a federal law that requires timely warning to students if a threatening crime has occurred on campus.
The partially clothed body of Laura Dickinson was found Dec. 15, but the school at first announced that there was "no reason to suspect foul play."
It was Fallon's first public statement since the June 8 report by the law Firm Butzel Long.
"We did get it wrong, shamefully so," Fallon said.
Some professors are not happy with the apology or how it was handled. Many claimed there needs to be change at the top.
Orange Taylor III, 20, of Southfield faces trial Oct. 15 on murder and criminal sexual conduct charges.
A faculty union leader told regents that Fallon should go, The Ann Arbor News reported.
"If it is discovered that the university violated federal law in this matter, then the president should not be allowed to continue to lead Eastern Michigan University," said Howard Bunsis, chapter president of the American Association of University Professors.
Regents have said they will not take action until they receive the results of a report by the Department of Education, which is expected later this month. At that point, they plan to call a special meeting.
