HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. -- Fires burned for several hours and ruined seven homes on two streets in Highland Park Thursday.
The blazes began sometime after 3 p.m., in two separate houses -- one on Buena Vista and another on Waverly -- and spread to occupied homes, Local 4 reported.
The Buena Vista fire spread to a second home that was engulfed in flames. Firefighters had to evacuate the scene and let the blaze burn for a short time after they discovered ammunition in the home was being ignited by the flames, Local 4 reported.
The city's Fire Department called on Hamtramck and Detroit firefighters for help and continued battling the fire as it spread. Highland Park police officers could be seen on rigs helping fire crews direct hoses.
A Highland Park firefighter told Local 4 that the department did not have enough water pressure, manpower or equipment to adequately fight the fires.
No injuries were reported.
Crews worked to extinguish flames most of the day and were continuing to put out hot spots after 11 p.m.
The American Red Cross planned to send a disaster team to the neighborhood to assist families in need.
An arson investigation was set to begin Friday, Local 4 reported.
