UPDATED: 6:52 am EDT April 16, 2002

A 10th-grader at River Rouge High School died after apparently drowning in the school's swimming pool during gym class, Local 4 reported.

Willis Holder, 16, was found floating in the deep end of the pool at about 2:40 p.m. A teacher saw his body and pulled him from the water. CPR was administered and an ambulance was called to the scene.

School officials said that the teacher was able to get a faint pulse before the emergency medical crew arrived.

The crew took Holder to Wyandotte Hospital where he later died, Local 4 reported.

The preliminary investigation indicates an accidental death, but police are continuing to look into the case and an autopsy is expected, according to Local 4.

The teen had been in a class with about 20 other students and two teachers, both of whom were trained as life guards. The deep end of the pool is 14 feet deep.

One teacher was in the locker room with students and the other was helping students out of the pool, Local 4 reported.

The students had just completed swimming laps across the width of the pool.

Holder's body was discovered about 15 minutes before school was to let out for the day, and many students had left the building.

About eight counselors are expected to be at River Rouge Tuesday to assist students, Local 4 reported.

Administrators have called a 7 a.m. meeting for teachers.

Holder was a first-year student at the school and had an older brother who is expected to graduate this spring, according to the station.
