DETROIT – Donovan Lyles Jr., who turned 5 years old just a month ago, was shot about 6 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Irvington Street near Winchester Avenue in Detroit.
Donovan was sitting on the floor watching cartoons on TV when someone outside fired shots at the house. One shot crashed through the windows and blinds, then right through a couch. The bullet struck little Donovan in the face before it lodged in the wall.
"I heard a loud pop and I heard screaming. I came upstairs and my grandson was in my daughter's arms," said the boy's grandfather, Jerome Brazelton.
At noon Wednesday, Donovan was alert at a hospital. However, he lost an eye. Family members believe the gunman targeted the wrong home.
Exactly 8 miles east of this shooting -- at about the same time Tuesday evening -- a 13-year-old girl was shot and killed inside a home on Lappin Avenue near 7 Mile Road. The teen was babysitting when one of the kids she was watching found a loaded gun, started playing with it and shot and killed the babysitter.
Detroit police say the father of one of the boys in the home at the time of the 13-year-old's shooting will be facing charges because he is a convicted felon who had a gun.
