The Saline School Board unanimously voted to place the superintendent on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into her reinstatement of a freshman football player last week.
The Board named Scot Graden, the district’s executive director of community services to act as interim superintendent.
‘The investigation will proceed; we haven’t determined the form it will take at this time,” said Saline School Board President Lisa Slawson. “It’s all very fluid.”
According to a representative for the school, the controversy began in August when a student violated the student code of conduct and was suspended from the team for one year.
The boy cussed out a coach after he said he asked for more water. The student appealed to the superintendent and claimed his misbehavior may have had something to do with him not being properly hydrated.
The superintendent, Beverly Geltner, investigated and ruled the team's coaches did not follow the national guidelines for student health and heart stress. As a result of the ruling, the player was reinstated to the football team.
The school spokesperson said the four-person coaching staff for the freshmen team disagreed with the superintendent and resigned in protest of the ruling.
The rest of the season for the freshmen team has been canceled because of a controversy.
“The kid should just be kicked out of the school for the rest of the semester, and her, (superintendent) leave of absence--is a good one,” said parent Susan Schmitt.
The school board will meet again Friday.
